Some people were making suggestions to me about a Vietnam Mod. I can't mod that well but basically the North Vietnamese will have cheap, veteran and expendable infantry but very expensive vehicles and "tactical aides". The U.S and South Vietnam will be like a coalition of sorts. This means they will have more modern technology (i.e. more tanks, planes and helicopters). The maps will be the hardest to create, it would look strange having spruce pine trees in the Vietnam central highlands.

Well there isn't much of a difference in timeframe, so luckily it will not have to be a total conversion. Abrams do not exist, and US soldiers will have to be using M16s. If you want, I can help make the maps.

As i said in the thread i made about making this
alot of stuff will stay the same
for example, the tactical aids (except a nuke) as a nuke was never used in vietnam
and yea, the south vietnamese/US will have better technology but the vietcong will be sneakier, and have special abilities that help that be stealth

More like better cover bonuses and such. Snipers ore cheap and plentiful, while tanks are extremely expensive. Vietcong infantry also have the ability to "garrison" trees like they would a building.

If you want, I can host the server and make the maps.

Yeah, I obviously didn't think this over. If not Vietnam maybe add the Chinese to the game.

i always liked the idea of vietnam mods in battlefield 2, a942 etc like Eve of destruction. Sadly though usa will be more powerful due to their technology but you could make vietnamese infantry cheaper

well i guess demo engineers will make panji traps and will kill infanty that goes over it and claymores etc

Reply

Feb 05, 2008 23:32

Yeah, traps would be interesting. Gameplay will differ a lot depending on which side you play on so that's an upside (however you look at that). Infantry will diffently be heavily played so I'm thinking increased squad sizes and engineers that can lay mines, traps, etc. Once again, I have no modder.

In the mean time, here some facts about Vietnam :)

Casualties: The United States lost roughly 51,000 troops in the conflict with communist forces. However, North Vietnamese casualties are still unknown. They're estimated at 500,000+.

I'm certain that was false propaganda. We always wasted our bullets on things we couldn't see. Our troops almost never found a dead body, they just decided they must be pwning by the number of US dollars spent, troops deployed, bullets fired, and bombs dropped that we must have killed 10 to one. I really like the idea of throwing away the stock rock paper scissors balancing WiC has right now and making you think differently per faction. UaW is a good example of this.

It's interesting that you mentioned that, I'm not really sure how they estimated the casualties. I imagine it was extremely difficult.

Vietnam fact #2: Austraila's involvment in Vietnam was limited to only training the South Vietnamese. These elite Austrailian SAS units formed the AATTV (Austrailian Army Training Team Vietnam). Only about 100 men strong, the unit also conducted numerous missions into enemy territory earning many Victoria's Crosses.

Talk about Irony.

So, would someone mind creating an actual Invision free for this? We will need it if we want this to become a real mod.

I've been searching but so far I can'y find anyone, what's an "Invision"? Also, I was thinking about incorporating other mods into ours. Such as the "Realmod" series, if we can invovle other modders, we'll be more likely to find someone willing to mod for us. I can provide research, statstics, advice, etc..

Vietnam fact #3: To North Vietnam, the war was known as the "Helicopter War" given the massive number of U.S helicopters used. In all, the United States pushed 11,827 helicopters into service. 5,086 of those were destroyed.

Interseting. We should really try to jack up the blackhawk, decrease it's cost, add a turret, inprove armor, ect. Maybe air players will get an extra point bonus.

And Phazon would be a huge help, it would be great if we could use Realmod along with this.

And an Invision Free is just a free forum website that you can throw together really fast. Maybe I'll make one tommarrow.

Ok, ok, maybe it wasn't Rambo or Stallone. Other two facts are true though, I got research on them. I picked up something on a war movie documentary about famous draft dodgers. Anyway, sorry.

NOTE: I changed the Vietnam fact #2.

Also to answer Dud Doodoo, we need someone to make a UH-# "Huey" model for the helicopters (any model would suit the purpous like a UH-1 or 2, etc.).

Vietnam fact #4: The famous 7th Air Cavalry, whom fought in the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley, had the same 7th Cavalry as General George A. Custer when he and his men were slaughtered at Little Big Horn. November 17, 1965, The 7th Air Cavalry, amongst other units, fought against an entire division of the North Vietnamese Army, roughly 4,000 men. The North Vietnamese were defeated but it cost the U.S 234 men dead and 242 wounded.

Hey, good luck with the mod

I can't help much, but if you need listings for tanks and vehicles relevant to that time just contact me.
Anyway, heres some vehicles you might want to take a look at for the mod
USA
M41 Walker Bulldog
M48 Main Battle Tank (or M60, they shared the same gun and powerplant)
M8/M20 Armoured Car (not sure about this one)
M113 Armoured Personnel Carrier
M107 174mm Self Propelled Gun (Heavy artillery?)

NVA (little difficult, but I found some possibilites)
T54 Tank
T62 (this was exported widely, no sure about Vienam)
BR50 Tracked Armoured Personnel Carrier
Or
BR60 Armoured Personnel Carrier

Just contact me if you need more vehicles or something jus conact me on my profile or something

EDIT: Sorry, misplaced vehicle names
Change M8/M20 to LAV-1--/V-100 Commando armoured car (used for patrols and base defense)

You're a !@#$%^& genius dude! That helped a whole lot but we may need to use the Bradly without the TOW launcher, they appeared late in Vietnam. Thanks for the NVA vehicles though I haven't even begun research on that yet.

As for M8 "Greyhound" armored car, those saw action in WWII as well, we may go with the M20 if we do give that option.

NOTE: We have begun some work on the map but the modelling and gameplay process maybe slow to come. We are, however, looking for participants who can help. Please contact me if you have questions or post them on this thread.

Vietnam fact #5: Many North Vietnamese soldiers sacrifced food, water and medical supplies to carry the heavier ammo (as compared to the U.S M16 rifle) for their AK-47s.

Mini guns are a good idea for U.S but remeber, we don't want the U.S to be too pwoerful so that's why I'm giving them weaker infantry and poorer line-of-sight.

Good News: Our mod now has a website! It's still under development but it will be further improved. In the mean time, enjoy some videos and music I posted. The URL is; www.freewebs.com/fireinthejungle. Please note the mod is named "Broken Arrow".

Vietnam fact #6: 70% of all Americans killed in Vietnam were volunteers as opposed to draftees.

i'd be happy to help.. im not really an veteran modder but i've modded allot of diffrent games, though i've never really created anything big, i've done some small and medium stuffs, made allot of NPC and player skins for halflife 1 back in the good ol day's, made several mods for Tiberian Sun and was the first one to make Air units in Empire at War.. or at least the first one to release Air Units to the public. was a good coder and map maker for Operation flashpoint, though that wouldn't really count as modding

I've always wanted an Vietnam Era RTS so i'd be more then willing to help in any way, im certain i could be helpfull in modding game aspects and units, even creating skins, im also a pretty good at making up Lore & stories if you want to create an SP campaign
