Official World in Conflict® Map Making Contest Winners Selected

MALMÖ, SWEDEN -- July 3, 2008

After months of engaged map-making in the dedicated World in Conflict® community, the official World in Conflict Map Making Contest has finally come to an end. We received a large number of high quality entries and Massive Entertainment’s jury had a difficult time picking the final winners.

Having looked through their favourite maps thoroughly, the jury ultimately decided to give the awards to the maps “Arizona”, “Ozzault” and “Valley”. The Grand Prize for Best Map, which includes a cash prize of $1,000, the jury decided to give to EvilViking for his Domination map “Paradise”. All of the four winners will receive an NVIDIA 8800 series graphics card for their achievements and the winning maps are also set to be included in a future World in Conflict title.

While this particular competition is over, the World in Conflict modding community continues to grow. To get involved with modifying the game, please visit the official World in Conflict online community at www.massgate.net.

For a full list of the maps and the jury’s motivation, please see below:

Winner of BEST MAP:

Paradise

Creator: EvilViking
Game Mode: Domination

Comment: “Paradise features some of the best blending of custom graphics, gameplay design and original artistry seen yet within the World in Conflict Map-Making community. The sheer amount of work behind its creation sets this map apart from all others and marks it as the winner of the World in Conflict Map Making Contest 2008. “

See Paradise map screenshots.

Winner of BEST TUG OF WAR MAP:

Arizona

Creator: Slepnyrl
Comment: “With strong visuals, custom artwork and innovative gameplay design, Arizona stands out not only as one of the best Tug of War maps seen yet for World in Conflict, but also as one of the strongest community projects to date.”

Winner of BEST ASSAULT MAP:

Ozzault

Creator: Luva
Comment: "Because of a strong sense of visuals and a solid understanding of good gameplay this map stands out as one of the best assault maps we've seen so far. Good use of props and a keen eye for detail lift this above many others and make it a real winner. Many maps fail by trying to be too complicated, this one succeeds because it does a great job of being simple fun."

Winner of BEST USE OF DX10 FEATURES:

Valley

Creator: Gozeus
Comment: “Visual polish and a powerful use of advanced atmospheric effects make this map into something special indeed. A lot of effort has been put into making the mood, lighting and subtle shifts of battlefield ambience the basis of a terrific play-experience. All of these things combine to make the best use of DirectX 10 we’ve seen in a user-made map.”

Indeed... perhaps there were no other domination maps entered?
So we have 3 new great maps to play :) And now question to massgate - will they add those maps to download via massgate as official maps ? Like "vineyard" " Countryside" and "Virginia" before ?
Congratulations!

When will the final map versions beeing released?
I had submitted a domination map though...
Congrats to the winners. Could the developers acknowledge the rest of us who have submitted maps for the contest by listing them under an Honorable Mentions header with download links?

Also, how about a small gift - maybe a t-shirt for the rest of us who have put in a lot of hard work for the contest? I know that I have put in close to 70 hours to develop my map so it totally sucks to not get any recognition in the end... :-)

me thinks a guy by the name of EvilViking won "Best Domination Map" and "Best Map" overall
i also think there is no domination Map winner , because the actually best map is a domination map
so it is the best domination Map ;)

Congrolation(s) to all winner

There were simply too many submissions!

Is Kamchatka your map? I was considering adding it to a second custom map server (it looks nice), but realised that the command point on the island (the third one) isn't possible to cap even with air drops.

My tip to you is to host your map on wicbase.com, post a thread on the map forum asking for some feedback, and we could possibly host a slightly improved version on an unranked server in the future.

And again: thanks all for your submissions, there were many interesting maps! If you want them played by the community, I suggest getting some attention on the map forum. People there are normally eager to give feedback. Just because the contest is over doesn't mean we won't keep an eye on interesting maps.

Hi Mir,

Thanks for following up with me. Kamchatka is indeed my map. The island control point that you have mentioned requires a coordinated amphibious assault with a possible paratrooper drop. It is a rather challenging control point thus the name: Devil's Island. :-) I think that the final set of control points inside the power plant complex calls for some interesting offensive and defensive tactics.

I would love to see what people think of my map.

You can download it here.
